History
MegaMillions began in 1996 and used to be called The Big Game. It wasn’t until 2002 that it was rebranded as MegaMillions and became the lottery powerhouse that it is today.
The largest payout ever was $233 million dollars in 2007.
How to Play
To win the MegaMillions jackpot, players need to correctly guess 5 numbers (1 to 56) and one number (1 to 46). Tickets cost $1 and are available in gas stations, convenience stores and grocery store in participating states.
Texas offers its players an additional “Megaplier” option. The Megaplier costs an extra $1 and gives players the chance to multiply their non-jackpot winnings by up to 4 times. While the numbers for MegaMillions are chosen using randomly selected balls, the Megaplier is selected using a random number generator.
Odds
MegaMillions players will always win money if they guess the Mega Ball correctly (numbered 1 to 46). If the player misses the Mega Ball, he or she will need to guess three of the regular numbers correctly (1 to 56). The odds of guessing the Mega Ball without any other numbers are 1 in 75 and it pays $2. The odds of guessing three regular numbers without the Mega Ball are 1 in 306 and it pays $7.
Of course, the jackpot is the reason everyone plays. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 175,711,536. The jackpot total is variable but it’s always several million dollars or more.
The overall odds of winning anything are 1 in 40. |
